"Stalking Beauty" Freshman Seminar Course Work on Display in Dupre Library

This year, the UNIV 100 course taken by all first-time freshmen at UL Lafayette underwent a radical change; instead of having all students take the same freshman seminar, each department was tasked with creating their own version of the course. Though each version of the course addresses different themes and subjects, their common goal is to transition these new students from high school into college life. An exhibition of work from all of the UNIV 100 courses will open at the Dupre Library on Nov 19, 2015.

The School of Architecture and Design created their own unique version of this class entitled "Stalking Beauty." This course asked students to contemplate beauty in our everyday lives and the reasons why humans need it. Students were challenged to go out into the city and critically think about examples of "ugly" vs. "beautiful." They travelled though the campus and the city, documenting their findings in a "passport." What exactly constitutes the city we live in, and how does it affect us? How can we become the generator of beautiful ideas and actions? In this course, the goal was to activate the anarchy necessary to initiate change through weekly lectures, presentations, discussions, explorations, art installations and flash mobs.

There were 6 sections of "Stalking Beauty," with 150 students total. Each of the 3 main projects was done as a large group, with all 150 students participating. Each of the projects were small on their own, but when they were gathered together, they made a large impact. Two of the projects are featured in the videos below, and one will be on display in the Dupre Library for the UNIV 100 Showcase.

Check out these two videos to see our Stalking Beauty students' group projects!

Individual Artwalk Installation

To conclude the first module of the course, students created mini art installations inspired by the work of artist Andy Goldsworthy. When displayed together on a highly active sidewalk, these small installations create a large impact and provide a new and unexpected moment of beauty on our campus. Special thanks to Levi Porter for making the video!

Parking Lot Flashmob

Stalking Beauty students walked from campus to the Albertsons parking lot on Johnston St to show how even on a busy day, many parking spots are underutilized. By standing in the open parking spaces, students brought awareness to the fact that parking lots such as these can become great opportunities for human occupation. Special thanks to Aaron Schaubhut for making the video!
